7 Football Training Drills to Sharpen Your Skills at Any Level

These 7 drills are used by our coaches every day at Play Matrix. Practice them on your next turf booking and you'll see immediate improvement in your game.

Football training drills on the turf

You do not need a coach or special equipment for most of these. A ball, a few cones (water bottles are fine), and a wall or a partner is enough. Do a few before your next game and you will feel the difference in your first touch and your fitness.

1. Cone dribbling — close control

Set 5–6 cones a metre apart in a line. Dribble through using both feet, small touches, head up between touches. Go slow for control first, then build speed. 4–6 runs.

2. Wall passes — first touch

Stand 3–4 metres from a wall. Pass, control the rebound with one touch away from your body, pass again. Alternate feet. Then try controlling with the outside of the foot, or on the half-turn. 3 minutes each foot.

3. The figure-8 — turning

Two cones about 5 metres apart. Dribble a figure-8 around them, using drag-backs, inside-hooks and outside turns at each cone. This builds the tight turns that get you out of trouble in small-sided games. 60 seconds, rest, repeat 4 times.

4. Finishing from the edge

Place a ball on the edge of the box (or ~16m out). Take one touch to set yourself, then strike low into the corner. Work on placement before power. 10 with each foot. Add a passer to make the first touch realistic.

5. 1v1 to goal — attacking and defending

With a partner, take turns attacking a small goal from 15 metres while the other defends. The attacker practises committing the defender and changing pace; the defender practises jockeying and timing the tackle. First to 5 goals.

6. Passing triangles — movement off the ball

Three players, one ball, a 10-metre triangle. Pass and move to a new point of the triangle so there is always a passing option. Two touch, then one touch. This is the best habit to build for small-sided football.

7. Ball-carry shuttles — match fitness

Dribble 20 metres at 80% pace, turn, dribble back. That is one rep. Do 6, rest 60 seconds, repeat the set 3 times. It matches the stop-start running of a 5-a-side game, with the ball at your feet.

A 30-minute solo session

  • 5 min — jog and dynamic stretches
  • 10 min — cone dribbling + figure-8 + wall passes
  • 10 min — finishing + ball-carry shuttles
  • 5 min — juggling and easy passing to cool down

💡 Do it before your game

Twenty minutes of this before a game is far better than standing around. You will start sharp instead of taking 15 minutes to warm into the match.
